dscn1585.jpgMaterials:

  • Sculpey Ultralight clay
  • Premo!Sculpey clay in cobalt blue #5063, sea green #5305
  • Kemper 5/8" square cutter
  • Polyform summer/autumn flex mold
  • Pasta machine
  • Cutting tool (straight edge blade or knife)
  • Scalloped edge paper mache box (I found mine at Wal-Mart)
  • FolkArt acrylic paint by Plaid in #653 Metallic Emerald Green, #493 Metallic Bright Red, #654 Amethyst
  • Sponge brush
  • Small paint brush
  • The Ultimate! Glue by Crafters Pick

Procedure for box:

  1. Using the sponge brush paint the entire paper mache box with Emerald green metallic paint. Set aside to dry. Details can be added (dots, squiggles) using the Bright Red and Amethyst paints.
  2. Cut 1 section (1/4 block) of the sea green clay. Begin to condition by rolling the clay between your hands until clay forms a snake. Fold the snake, squish the snake, and then roll into a snake again. Repeat this 4-6 times. Set aside.
  3. Follow above directions with the cobalt blue clay. Set aside.
  4. Cut 2 pieces of Sculpey Ultralight clay, one equal to each of the conditioned clays. Roll one of the pieces into a snake and place it next to the sea green snake. Begin twisting the 2 colors together (think "candy cane"). Roll the twist from one end to the other (like a snail shell), then squish it together. Roll the blended clay into a snake, twist, roll, and squish. Continue this until the 2 colors are marbleized together. Repeat with second piece of Ultralight and cobalt blue clay.
  5. Roll each of the marbleized clays through the pasta machine on the thickest setting (#1 on my machine). Change pasta machine to next setting and reroll each of the sheets of clay. Change the setting one final time (third thickest setting) and reroll each of the sheets of clay.
  6. Lay the sheets of clay flat on your work surface. Cut 32 squares from each. Place the squares on a baking surface (I used a piece of glass form an old picture frame). Bake at 275* for 30 minutes. Let cool.
  7. Spread top of box with The Ultimate! Glue (be sure to spread it all the way to the edges). Place tiles on top alternating colors in a checker board pattern. I found it easiest to lay one row at a time, side by side. When lid is completely covered press tiles firmly together from the sides and top. Let dry.

Procedure for pieces:

  1. Condition Sculpey Ultralight clay. Roll into 24 3/8" balls (the size of large peas). Press a ball into the sunflower section of the mold. Flex the mold to remove. If clay sticks to the mold a bit of cornstarch dusted into the mold will allow flowers to pop out perfectly. Repeat with the other 23 balls. Place flowers on baking surface.
  2. Bake at 275* for 30 minutes. Let cool.
  3. Paint the petals of 12 flowers with the Amethyst paint. Paint the other 12 with the Bright Red. If desired the centers can be painted with the opposite color. Let dry.

Now you are ready for a game! Have fun....
